Some useful care instructions on using your lightweight MSR Tent and how to seam seal it before first use. In Australian conditions where it can be quite wet, we recommend seam sealing your tent post-purchase and before first use.
This warranty does not cover wear and tear to your product. Common examples of wear and tear include: faded colors, abrasions, scuffing/scratches, degradation of materials caused by UV exposure or use, and corrosion, etc. Additionally, this warranty does not cover products that have been altered in any way, improperly maintained, or misused, abused or neglected.
Have you ever experienced this? You pull your tent from the closet, start to unfold it and it’s… sticky, kind of gummy, maybe the seams are flaking off. Your tent’s not that old. So, what happened?
Science happened!
Over time, moisture, heat and humidity have been chemically breaking down your tent’s waterproof coating and seam tape—both as you’ve been using it and storing it—leaving you with a defeated tent. This natural process, called hydrolysis, happens much more quickly on today’s lightweight tents, and particularly in humid conditions like Australia and South East Asia.—an issue that’s been frustrating the tent industry for more than a decade.
To fix this issue with MSR Tents, MSR has developed Xtreme™ Shield System—a two part solution that maximises the life of your tent’s waterproof coating and keeps those seams intact.
Revolutionary Xtreme™ Shield waterproof coating
We began by looking at industries that require ultra-durable waterproof coatings to protect their products from the elements. Taking cues from their coating formulas, we developed a coating that’s revolutionary for the tent industry. We’re calling it Xtreme Shield.
How is it different? The magic is at the molecular level. Xtreme Shield’s polyurethane features a molecular chain that’s formulated specifically to hold up against heat and humidity. Therefore, it resists the premature degradation that traditional tent polyurethane coatings experience.
For you, this means a tent that lasts much longer, with a quality that’s maintained over time. In fact, this waterproof coating is 3 times more durable than standard coatings, giving you reliable weather protection season in and season out.
To address the seam tape flaking issue, we use a precision-stitched, factory-sealed seam that’s not only more durable than a taped seam, but can be maintained over time if need-be to ensure it provides watertight protection over the life of your tent.
What makes the construction so durable? For starters, we use a lap-felled seam, which is extremely strong. Secondly, our meticulous stitching creates a tiny, precise hole. Finally, we go back to a tried-and-true poly-cotton thread blend that swells when wet, a thread proven in the rugged tents of the past. As an extra measure of defense, we add a seam sealing step at the factory, which ensures the tent is rock-solid and reliably watertight out of the bag regardless of the environment you plan to use it in.
While taped seams degrade and peel off over time, ruining your tent, our stitched seams can be cared for over the long-term. As your tent ages, adding sealant to any areas affected by wear will keep your seams performing well for years to come.
Such quality construction demands the careful craftsmanship that we’ve always built into MSR products and we’re proud to once again offer the level of long-term performance you expect from MSR.
Please note that after considerable testing in the Southern Hemisphere, Spelean also recommend that if you are using your tent in areas of high humditiy and rain, such as Tasmania, Victoria etc, we suggest you also seam seal any Xtreme™ Shield tent fly for added protection in those climates.

MSR longer manufactures the Marathon 205/Marathon EX Ceramic Element. The Marathon 205 Ceramic Element was our first ceramic element from 1996, which came with the first generation WaterWorks and MiniWorks micro filters. It went out of production in 2002. The Marathon 205 was replaced with the Marathon EX Ceramic Element in 2003 when we started offering expedition grade water filters and offered 25% faster filter rates compared to pre-2003 models. The Marathon EX Ceramic element was discontinued in 2008 and replaced with the current MiniWorks/WaterWorks Ceramic Element.
The current MiniWorks/WaterWorks Ceramic Element is interchangeable with both the Marathon 205 Ceramic Element and the Marathon EX Ceramic Element. Replacement cartridges can be purchased on our website and most major outdoor gear retailers. The cartridge includes all the necessary O-rings required to operate the micro filter.
The Filter Element is available in Australia from MSR retailers. See the link below for more information, or part numbers to give retailers

MSR treat the mesh portion of our tents with a factory applied DWR to keep the mesh from becoming saturated with water.
Your TrailShot filter is not compatible with the gravity components of the Trail Base Water Filter Kit. That is why we don’t sell those gravity components separately. While the TrailShot filter and the small filter in the Trail Base Kit look similar, they are indeed different—particularly their spouts and prefilters. Therefore, the TrailShot will not integrate with the Trail Base’s gravity components.
MSR are considering making design adjustments that will allow for integration in the future.
If there's an off-taste or odour to your Dromedary or DromLite bag, it may be necessary to clean the bag. In most cases, using warm or hot soapy water should be sufficient, but if the odour or taste is persistent try the following procedure.
For deeper cleaning:
Caution: When adding lemon juice to baking soda, effervescence occurs and will cause pressure to build in a capped bag.
Activated carbon has long been used in treatment devices because of its adsorptive properties—it attracts many types of molecules to its surface and traps them. Carbon is also highly porous, so a small piece provides lots of surface area.
For these reasons, activated carbon is great for catching many contaminants that are so small—tiny molecules—that they pass through a microfilter. These include tastes, odors, pesticides, herbicides and pharmaceutical byproducts. Carbon can also pull out some heavy metals.
However, it’s important to know that activated carbon has its vulnerabilities. At MSR, we believe carbon is best used as a secondary removal media—another level of protection after you’ve filtered out (or purified water of) microbes. This is because:
1.) When the water’s contamination level is high, the surface area fills up quickly;
2.) If the water’s flow rate is too fast, carbon is less likely to catch all the contaminants;
3.) Adsorptive filters, like carbon, don’t indicate when their surface is full—you have no way of knowing when it’s no longer doing its job.
Therefore, treatment devices that rely solely on adsorption to remove the microbes run the risk of letting some of those immediate threats through to you.
For these reasons, MSR products don’t rely on adsorption/carbon to remove the microbes. The MSR MiniWorks, for example, uses a ceramic element to filter out the bacteria, protozoa and sediment, and then activated carbon to reduce tastes, odors and chemicals.
Activated carbon can make water more enjoyable to drink and adds an extra level of safety, but it’s still important to research where you’re going, and the types of filters and purifiers ideal for those environments. A quick call to the ranger station can inform you of any particular local risks. Unfortunately, not even activated carbon will remove everything. But in most wilderness regions, a high-quality filter or purifier can get you out and back—with nothing more than stories of great adventure to share.

Footprints usually have a shiny (coated) side and dull (uncoated) side. You should place the dull side on the ground (shiny side facing up) in order to minimize abrasion on the coating.
MSR we get this question all the time: How do you recycle fuel canisters?
Isobutane canisters are made of painted steel and plastic valves. Technically they can be recycled as mixed metal. Unfortunately, the process is more complicated than just throwing your spent canister in a bin. Fuel canisters can only be recycled in areas where mixed metal is accepted, and they can only be processed when properly prepared beforehand. Here’s how to make your fuel canister recyclable:
This last step is the tricky part. Very few curbside recycling programs handle mixed metals, and even fewer recognise and recycle fuel canisters. Check your local recycling program before you put them in the bin. You can always drop them off at a metal recycling centre if there’s one in your area, these places almost always handle mixed metals. If you’re not sure what to do, contact your local Council for advice, most have a drop off location/depot for mixed metals and e-waste these days.
Remember, just because the canister is picked up by your curbside program doesn’t mean it will be recycled – many recyclable items are thrown away because they aren’t clearly identified. If you have any doubts, we recommend you deliver your canisters directly to a metal recycling centre or Council refuse/collection point or Resource Recovery Centre. That’s the best way to make sure your canisters are recycled.
Good luck, and happy recycling!
One of the primary benefits of the WindBurner and Reactor is that they operate on 100% primary air. All air and fuel mixing occurs inside the mixer tube of the stove, allowing the flame to be completely enclosed and protected from wind with the integrated heat exchanger. This construction makes the WindBurner and Reactor’s radiant burner far more wind resistant than a conventional burner.
Stoves with fully enclosed burners that operate on 100% primary air require lean air and fuel mixtures to prevent excessive carbon monoxide production. A stove with a leaner air and fuel mixture requires more energy to light because there is more air in the mixture. Compared to other fire-starters such as matches and strike igniters, the Piezo igniter produces less energy, which is why it cannot be used to ignite the WindBurner or Reactor stove system.
"Useful life" means your product's lifetime - not your lifetime; in other words, your product's warranty lasts only until it has reached the point where it is no longer safely useful/functional, a point which varies for each product depending how often a product is used, where it is used, how well it has been cared for and maintained, etc.
The wear and tear all products experience through use will cause them to show age and wear; the more a product is used, the faster the wear and tear will occur, and the faster that product will reach the end of its useful life.
For instance, an MSR tent's lifespan is directly connected to the amount you use it. A tent's biggest enemy is UV radiation (just like your skin). A tent that lives in extreme conditions at high altitude, such as Everest Base Camp, may only last a few months, while a well taken care of tent, used occasionally under normal conditions, can last for many years. A typical MSR Tent useful life is aproximate 125 nights of use/5 years.
At the most basic level, a four-season (or winter) tent is designed to withstand extreme weather, holding up to fierce winds and heavy snow loads. A three-season (or backpacking) tent is designed for lightweight performance and breathability.
Three-season tents are designed primarily to keep your pack light while still offering protection from bugs, wind and rain. Because of this, they’re often built of lighter fabrics and feature more mesh for breathability and airflow.
Because warmth is important, four-season tents greatly reduce or eliminate mesh on the tent body. The addition of snow flaps around the tent’s perimeter on some models prevents snow and cold air from blowing inside.
Read more on the MSR Blog
Chipped paint, while aesthetically unpleasing, will not interfere with the performance of your snowshoes. Over time, however, the exposed metal may rust. The main parts of your snowshoes that are vulnerable to rusting are the crampons and some rivets, which are made of steel. The rails on your snowshoes are made of aluminum, so they will not rust.
To prevent your snowshoes from developing rust, always rinse your snowshoes with water after use and dry with a towel. It is not necessary to paint over the exposed metal. Rinsing and drying your snowshoes is especially important in areas where salt and other de-icing chemicals are applied to snow.
If rust does develop, we recommend using steel wool to remove the rust from your snowshoes.
WindBurner Stove Systems with the remote-canister design are not intended to work with the canister inverted, in liquid-feed mode. Instead, the WindBurner is designed with a pressure regulator specifically to combat the effects of cold weather and low canister pressure caused by fuel use. This pressure regulator allows the WindBurner to deliver a faster and more consistent cooking experience than a liquid feed stove, down to 32◦ F/0◦ C, while maintaining flame control, which liquid-feed stoves lose. In temperatures below freezing, WindBurner stoves will continue to run at full output regardless of outside temperatures if you place the canister in water. This is because the pressure regulator is tuned to deliver maximum output at as low as 32◦ F/0◦ C. Surrounding the canister with water will keep the stove running at max output in these conditions.
Estimate for Cleaning
The frequency with which stove cleaning and fuel pump maintenance are required for your MSR stove will vary greatly depending on the type and quality of the fuel you use, the age of the fuel, how hot you are burning the stove, and other factors.
This chart will help provide a general estimate for when to clean and perform maintenance on your stove.
Fuel* | Estimate for Stove Cleaning & Pump Maintenance |
White Gas | every 40 hours of use |
Kerosene | high quality**: every 20 hours of use low quality: every 10 hours of use |
Diesel | high quality: every 20 hours of use low quality: every 10 hours of use |
Jet Fuel | every 20 hours of use |
Automobile Gas | every 10 hours of use |
Mineral Spirits | high quality: every 30 hours of use low quality: every 15 hours of use |
AV Gas | every 10 hours of use |
*Check your stove manual for a list of fuels that are compatible with your MSR stove before attempting to use any of the fuels listed above.
** A good quality fuel should appear clear, bright, without water, sediment or particles. If the fuel looks cloudy or has sediment at the bottom of the container, decant or filter the liquids from the solids. Look for fuel that is low in benzene, sulfur and aromatics as it will leave fewer deposits and emit less carcinogenic fumes.
Seam tape is a layer of tape made of polyurethane film that is placed by the manufacturer under the seams to block water from entering the seams. Seam tape has a more difficult time adhering to thinner fabric tents, and can breakdown or flake off over time, particularly with exposure to moisture, heat and humidity.
Seam sealing applies a layer of glue-like sealant across the seams. The sealant seeps into the stitching holes, creating a waterproof barrier. Seam sealants are less susceptible to degradation.
MSR discuss this in more detail in their blog post here
MSR tents utilize high-performance nylon fabrics for their exceptional balance of strength and weight. While nylon is the best choice for lightweight tents, it can display subtle property changes with changes in humidity. In winter, when it’s cold and very dry, you may find your tent fabric seems much tighter than in summer, when humidity levels are higher. Nylon also stretches when wet. In our testing we found that nylon tent fabrics stretch at least 3.65% after going from very dry to wet. This is normal, and our tents are designed to accommodate this fluctuation.
If you are having difficulty attaching your rain fly to the top cross pole, try spraying some water on the rain fly, and let it sit for at least 5 minutes. This will allow time for the fabric to stretch so that you can attach it to the cross pole.
Alternatively, if you are pitching the tent with a second person, have your tent mate attach one side of the fly to the cross pole and stabilize that side of the pole. Reach your hand under the rain fly and apply upward pressure to the cross pole so that it bends/arches upward in the middle (the poles are designed to bend this way). This will shorten the distance between the ends of the cross pole allowing you to attach the fly to the opposite side of the cross pole.
Step 1: Remove Excess Water
First, always attempt to remove any water left in the bladder. Shake out any excess droplets of water, and dry the inside film with a paper towel if possible.
Step 2: Prop Bladder Up
We’ve done extensive testing in our water lab, and the most efficient means of drying your bladder is to leave it pointed up. This allows water to evaporate and easily escape the bladder. Sunshine can also help to speed up the evaporation process, and all of our hydration systems are UV-safe and can be left in the sun to dry.
Step 3: Keep Interior Open
When the sides of your bladder touch each other, it drastically slows down the drying process. The interior will dry much faster if propped open to prevent the sides from touching each other. We suggest using something like a cooking spoon, spatula, or the Slidelock™ closure to prop open the bladder.
This colour of water typically comes from a high concentration of decaying vegetation adjacent to, or in, a water source, resulting in a variety of organic acids. These acids, and the accompanying water conditions, are very hard on ALL types of water filters. Get your water elsewhere if you can.
However, if no alternatives exist, MSR recommend backflushing/cleaning your filter after every use in the field. This will help minimise the impact of these impurities.
Then, when you return home, add 2 drops of unscented household bleach to one litre of water and backflush this solution through the filter. This will help break up organics that might be clogging the filter and prepare your system for long-term storage.
Note: extended use of tea-coloured water can permanently impair Hollow Fiber filter media.

Select 2019 MSR tents were built using MSR's new advanced Xtreme Shield™ waterproof coating, and durable, precision stitched seams. Unlike traditional seam construction which requires seam tape, which is prone to degrading and flaking prematurely on lightweight tents, these seams will last longer and can be maintained over time. MSR developed this construction to provide consumers a much higher quality, longer-lasting tent.
It has come to our attention that in some circumstances, not all rainfly seams are performing to MSR's waterproof standards.
If you received a notice from MSR or have read about your tent seams needing to be sealed, please read below. If you fit the specifications below, then our Support Team can supply you with the Gear Aid Seam Sealer from MSR.
The tent models potentially affected are:
Firstly, identify if your 2019 tent requires Seam Sealing. To do this, locate the Lot Tag on your tent, a white label found on the bottom seam of the rainfly near the door.
Tents with a Lot Tag #0818, 0918, 1018, 1118, 1218, 0119, 0219, 0319, 0519, 0619, 0719 will require a seam seal treatment.
Rainflys that have been retro-seam sealed by MSR will have an "S" stamp on the lot label, see image below. If you have an "S" you are good to go, your tent not only has Xtreme Shield™ waterproof coating but has already been seam sealed as well!
By using the MSR supplied Seam Sealer you will NOT void you tent's warranty.
Please lodge a Support Ticket with a photo of your tent's Lot Number and our Team will arrange to send you a Seam Sealer Kit.
We've got a Support Video explaining how to go about seam sealing your rainfly. VIEW HERE
Have you ever experienced this? You pull your tent from the closet, start to unfold it and it’s… sticky, kind of gummy, maybe the seams are flaking off. Your tent’s not that old.
Something like that ⬆ So, what happened? Science!
Over time, moisture, heat and humidity have been chemically breaking down your tent’s waterproof coating and seam tape—both as you’ve been using it and storing it—leaving you with a defeated tent.
This natural process, called hydrolysis, happens much more quickly on today’s lightweight tents, an issue that’s been frustrating the tent industry for more than a decade. We've also found that more humid environments like Australia and Asia exacerbate the hydrolysis. This is not unique to MSR, but their high peromance lightweight fabrics are susceptible.
If you have experienced this with your MSR tent, please lodge a Support Ticket and see if they can assist, they may be able to supply a replacement at a reasonable price.
One of the easiest ways to damage your tent is by not drying it as quickly as possible after it gets wet. Storing a wet tent for as little as 24 hours in warm weather is likely to start the process of mildew formation. Mildew can permanently damage the waterproof coatings by causing them to separate from the fabric, but mild to severe staining is more common. Mildew stains are permanent. They cannot be removed without potential harm to the fabric coatings and are not covered by warranty. Even when your tent appears to be dry after use, it is always best to assure it is completely dry before storing. Hang it outside or pile it loosely in your house for a few days, turning it inside and out to assure it has dried everywhere. Never machine dry your tent as the heat can melt the fabric.

One of the most common questions we get… can I put stickers on my helmet?
The short answer is no, unless you know the glue. The easy solution is to get the Petzl approved clear stickers, and then you can either write on them or apply your sticker to that clear one. There are also new options appearing for PRO helmets during 2019, including a helmet cover and a name plate attachment.

ATEX (also referred to as HAZLOC) are hazardous areas where there is a risk of explosion due to the atmospheric conditions, this could be related to fumes, dust, heat, confined space or a combination thereof.
Because electrical items and metallic items can cause explosions in these conditions, there are certifications for equipment to prevent these reactions.
Petzl has created the following ATEX guide for their Professional Headlamp range, so that you can decide which is appropriate for your hazardous work environment.

These days most Rope Access Accreditation bodies such as IRATA no longer recommend the use of a Petzl Shunt as a back-up device for Rope Access. Primarily the Shunt was designed for use in caving with two ropes being used in the device at all times. Some Rope Access and Rescue operators started using it with single ropes as a back-up device over time, and this was really contrary to the intent of the device and its design principles.
In 2012 Petzl issued the below statement, and in 2017/18 Petzl removed the Shunt from all Pro Catalogues and introduced a new single rope version [B03B] which is now purely a Sport device and only for backing up rappels/abseils.
Petzl individual serial numbers are located on each piece of PPE they manufacture. Between 2016/2017 Petzl began changing the Serial Number system in order to improve product manufacturing traceability. This process is ongoing and Technical Notices may not match the serial number system on your product (as at 1/1/2024).
The new codification (Code B below) will include the manufacturing batch number, which will give Petzl and users faster and more precise access to all manufacturing data.
The previous systems used were:
up to ~1999: 0506 (Month of manufacture (2 digits) and Year of manufacture (2 digits))
1999 - 2009: 99289A (Year (2 digits) Day (3 digits) Inspector (1 letter))
2009 - current (Code A): 09365AB1234 (Year (2 digits) Day (3 digits) Inspector (1 or 2 letters) Identifier (4 digits)
2016+ (eventually all products will carry this Code B): 13 digits, explained below.
Code B - 13 Digit Serial Number Explained:
Year of Manufacture: last two digits of the Year
Month of Manufacture: A = Jan through L = Dec
Batch Number: next 7 numbers
Incrementation: an individual indentifier - last 3 numbers
This change is being implemented gradually to the PPE starting in late 2016.
Note also that Instructions for Use will gradually include these evolutions. Consequently, until full implementation, you will observe some differences between the explanations of the serial number visible in the Instructions for Use, and the serial number visible on your PPE. (Code A is still partially in use, particulalry on Connectors, in 2024)
The following are guides to assist in finding your serial numbers on specified product types:
Hardware
Datamatrix is also evolving with this new codification (type B), only the individual serial number will be readable when scanning the Datamatrix from ~2016. See more on datamatrix at this FAQ.
Every Petzl product has a 'Reference Number' in addition to the model name. The Reference Number assists with confirming the generation, size and colour of a product, whether its a harness, headlamp or piece of PPE for working at height. The reference number is what you would typically refer to as a Model Number or Style Number.
To find your Petzl Reference Number, there are several options:
Datamatrix is evolveing, with the introduction of the Type B serial numbers (2016 onwards), only the individual serial number will be readable when scanning the Datamatrix. See below for more details.
You may have also noticed a 2D code printed on each piece of Petzl PPE gear, it looks like a QR code. It’s not exactly a QR code, it’s actually a 2D Rectangular Datamatrix code and it contains the individual serial number of that piece of gear. This can be scanned into a spreadsheet, database or tracking software.
The codes can be scanned by a compatible 2D Scanner* or even a phone. Our experimentation has found that the smaller karabiners or those that don’t have a lot of contrast between the colour of the karabiner and the colour of the printing (i.e. greys and silvers) can be a bit tricky for some phones and scanners but it is possible to scan, we were able to scan them using one or all of these tricks:
If you use a phone-based inspection App, such as Papertrail, this will save you a heap of time, particularly if you are inspecting so many karabiners!
There are several really good FREE phone based scanning apps for 2D codes, we tried and had success with these two:
Apple: NeoReader and i-nigma Android: NeoReader and i-nigma Windows: NeoReader and i-nigma
You can scan the serial number and then copy/paste to a spreadsheet on your phone, scan straight into an inspection app or send it to someone via text or email.
If you are working from a desktop/notebook, then using a 2D Barcode Scanner (USB or Bluetooth) is the way to go. You can scan the serial number straight into a cell on a spreadsheet or a database, saving you time and money without the need for expensive RFID Chips or stickers that other manufacturers charge you for, as the 2D codes are printed on every piece of PPE by Petzl.
There are several Inspection Tool Apps now available that will utilise this datamatrix, check out tools like

A date stamp with the month and year is stamped on Petzl headlamps.
The date stamp is a small circle that looks like a clock. Inside this circle there is a two-digit number that corresponds to the headlamps' year of manufacture. The dial represents the 12 months of the year, and an arrow points to the month of manufacture.

It is not uncommon for the terminals in a headlamp to become depressed and therefore not provide sufficient contact with the battery(s) to provide constant light. This can happen when either normal batteries or a CORE battery is inserted backwards, even momentarily into a battery case.
To resolve this, you simply need to pry/lever the terminal back into place slightly using a small screwdriver. Here is a video on how to do it. https://www.images.spelean.com.au/videos/check_terminal.MOV
Platypus (Cascade Designs) manufacturer's warranty:
At Platypus, we take pride in engineering the highest-quality outdoor gear available, and we stand behind everything we make. Platypus gear is built to be exceptionally durable and easily repaired. And we back it up with the best service in the industry, all to keep your gear performing for you—and out of landfills.
This Limited Lifetime Warranty is provided to you by Cascade Designs,
Inc., a company doing business as Platypus.
So long as you are the original purchaser, and you use your Platypus
product for the use it was intended (for example, using packs for
hydration while on the trail, and not as rock carriers for landscaping
efforts), and you treat your products with care and maintain them
properly, we warrant your product to be free from defects in materials
and workmanship for the useful life of your product..
“Useful life” means your product’s lifetime—not your lifetime; in other
words, your product’s warranty lasts only until it has reached the point
where it is no longer safely useful/functional, a point which varies
for each product depending how often a product is used, where it is
used, how well it has been cared for and maintained, etc. The wear and
tear all products experience through use will cause them to show age and
wear; the more a product is used, the faster wear and tear will occur,
and the faster that product will reach the end of its useful life.
Following your purchase of a Platypus product from an authorised
Platypus retailer, original product parts we determine are defective in
materials or workmanship (so long as the defect was not caused by damage
while in your possession, or unreasonable use, or failure to provide
reasonable and necessary maintenance), we will repair or replace at our
expense. In instances where your warranty-eligible Platypus product
requires service, but we no longer manufacture the product, or feel that
it cannot be repaired, we may offer to replace your product with one of
comparable value and function.
This warranty does not cover wear and tear to your product. Common examples of wear and tear include: faded colors, abrasions, scuffing/scratches, degradation of materials caused by UV exposure or use, and corrosion, etc. Additionally, this warranty does not cover products that have been altered in any way, improperly maintained, or misused, abused, or neglected
If we determine that the problem you are experiencing is not covered under warranty, we will, if possible, repair your product for a reasonable charge that includes return shipping and handling.

If your bite valve is coming off easily, we recommend re-fitting it by following these steps:
a. Remove the bite valve from the drink tube.
b. Cut a small section off the end of the drink tube.
c. Clean the bite valve and hose with rubbing alcohol.
d. Wet the end of the drinking tube with water or saliva and slide the bite valve back onto the end of the drink tube.
e. Let it all dry (at least overnight).
This should result in an excellent connection between the bite valve and drink tube, and the bite valve should stay in place.
MSR and Platypus reservoirs and Platy Soft bottles are lined with food grade material and contains no BPA or other harmful materials. If there’s an off-taste or smell to water that’s been stored in the reservoir, you can try adding a tablespoon of baking soda to a couple litres of boiling water and pouring this into the bag or bottle. When it’s cool enough to handle, slosh the water around and then let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Pour out the water-baking soda solution and rinse well before using it. A vinegar and water solution or lemon juice and water solution may also work to remove off tastes. Time may also help reduce off tastes and odours.
Many water sources have a fair amount of minerals and or other chemicals (even tap water) which may become more noticeable after a period of storage. We do not recommend storing your reservoirs for long periods of time with water in them. It’s best to let them dry out between uses.
Cleaning is really to make sure the product is rinsed out and free of any lingering tastes, while disinfecting is an attempt to sterilise your system. The determining factor is what the last liquid in your reservoir was. Disinfecting has more of an application if you’ve used your reservoir in ‘dirty water’ or notice visible signs of bacteria growth in your hydration bladder.
It’s up to the user and their personal preference. Our engineers rinse and dry their hydration bladders after every use, and this is a simple and effective way to keep your system in shape. Ultimately, it all comes down to your frequency of use and what you’re putting in your bladder (the bag that holds your water).
If you use a drink mix like Nuun or SkratchLabs, you should rinse after every use. These substances can leave a lingering taste and can also allow for bacteria growth. Make sure to always rinse after using these!
If you’ve filled it with water directly from a stream or lake in the wilderness without treating or filtering it, you’ve theoretically exposed your hydration bladder to bacteria. In the backcountry, this can be necessary from time-to-time, so just make sure to disinfect when you get home.
To remove the tube or bite valve from the reservoir, soak the end of the reservoir with the tube connection in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes. This should soften the plastic and make it easier to pull the tube or bite valve off. You can use the same technique to reattach the tube or bite valve: soak everything in warm water before pushing the parts back together. Once the plastic cools, it will firm up and seal itself more securely.
If you would like to filter water directly into a Big Zip EVO Hydration Reservoir from a GravityWorks Filtration System you have a couple options:
The Push-Pull Cap Adapter will allow you to filter into a bottle with a push-pull style cap such as the Platy Soft Bottle. The white plastic piece in the Push-Pull Cap Adapter can be used to filter directly into a hydration reservoir. This adapter is included in the GravityWorks 2.0L Water Filter Complete Kit, and can be purchased separately if you prefer the GravityWorks 4.0L Water Filter System.

Backflushing regularly maintains optimal performance of the filter cartridge. This is especially true when filtering murky or very silty water. Backflushing rinses out particulate that collects on the outside of the Hollow Fiber filter media. Infrequent backflushing makes it more difficult to restore the filter’s flow rate.
Based on results from our in-house water lab, we recommend backflushing a ¼ liter of water for every 6L filtered; this largely depends on the water clarify/quality. Our lab has found that with frequent backflushing, you can expect better maintenance of flow performance and longer life from your filter cartridge.
Depending on the water clarity/quality, backflush a ¼ liter of water for every 6 liters filtered.

Absolutely. After filling your reservoir, simply turn it upside down and simultaneously squeeze both the reservoir and the bite valve until all excess air is purged. You can also invert the reservoir and suck out the excess air, if you prefer. Either way—bye, bye sloshing!
Yes. Simply remove the bite valve on your hydration system and connect the end of the hose directly to your filtration system’s outflow port.
Platy GravityWorks™ filters are available with direct-to-reservoir and direct-to-bottle adapters for optimum versatility. Connecting a GravityWorks filter to your reservoir creates what is arguably the lightest, most compact and efficient way to get filtered water.
To help keep drink tubes and bite valves from freezing up, sip often to maintain flow, then blow any residual water back into the reservoir after you’ve finished drinking. It helps to squeeze the bite valve momentarily to remove any last drops. Using the Bite Valve & Drink Tube Insulator deters freezing, too.
Also, even if you are using the Bite Valve & Drink Tube Insulator, it still helps to keep as much of the drinking tube covered as possible, such as routing it inside a pack, strap, or jacket. You can also start off the day with warm or hot water in the reservoir, packing any extra clothing layers around it.
Does your hydration system have a shutoff valve? If so, it may be closed. Open it by twisting the bite valve 90 degrees (Clockwise closes it, Counter-clockwise opens it).
If that doesn’t work, you may be biting the valve too hard. The Platy HyperFlow Bite Valve is designed so that you don’t need to bite very hard. If you bite too hard the flow will be completely cut off. With your teeth, compress the valve lightly (only 30% to 50%) and water should flow.
To disinfect your Platypus hydration system, fill it with a solution of unscented household bleach and water, using a concentration of 2-5 drops per liter of water. Close and swirl for 10 seconds. Squeeze the bite valve to flush the hose and valve, being careful to keep the valve opening over the sink. Leave filled overnight. Dump solution and rinse hydration system (including hose and bite valve) three times with hot water, then air dry.
Note:for an eco-friendlier option, use a chlorine-free, hydrogen peroxide-based bleach alternative.
Yes. To do this, add water to your reservoir, being careful to not over-fill (fill no more than ¾ full—water expands as it freezes; it can burst your reservoir if you over-fill it). Purge all air and then lay your reservoir flat in the freezer overnight. Remove and enjoy a steady source of cold, refreshing hydration as the water melts!
Also, did you know that you can occasionally skip cleaning your reservoir by storing it in the freezer? It’s as simple as rinsing the whole system with fresh water, then placing it in the freezer until the next use.
From one end of the Big Zip™ zippered closure to the other, firmly pinch together both sides of the zipper along its full length. You should feel positive tactile feedback as the zipper connects and seals. Once sealed, invert the Water Tank to test the seal—a properly sealed Water Tank will not open in this test.
Yes. Periodically adding a little Vaseline to the tracks will keep them supple and easy to close. Wipe away any excess Vaseline. In the field, a little lip balm or water can do the trick. When closing the zipper, make sure to firmly pinch along its full length to properly seal it.
Yes. Lay it half-full on its side in freezer with all air purged. Do not over-fill. Water expands as it freezes and this can burst your bottle
To disinfect your Platypus bottle, fill it with a solution of unscented household bleach and water, using a concentration of 2-5 drops per liter of water. Close and swirl for 10 seconds. Leave filled overnight. Dump solution and rinse bottle three times with hot water, then air dry.
For a more planet-friendly alternative, use a chlorine-free, hydrogen peroxide-based bleach alternative like Free and Clear™ available from Seventh Generation®.
You can put a variety of beverages in your Platypus bottle, reservoir, or storage product. Just make sure you clean it thoroughly after each use to prevent bacteria from growing in it (including any hydration tubes or bite valves). Carbonated beverages are not recommended.
Platypus bottles can be dried by blowing a little air into them to inflate, then letting them stand upright and uncapped until the water evaporates.

Our formulation has been designed to work on all textiles, this makes your product choice simpler and saves you money in the long run as you can mix garments in the washing machine. Our Washing and Proofing products work on your waterproof, fleece, cotton, softshell fabrics. The finished result can differ depending on the surface of the textile.
Absolutely yes, Storm products use chemical technologies which replicate those used in the original manufacture of garments which have Gore-Tex®, Sympatex®, eVent® and other membranes.
The good news is no, unlike other products on the market our products have been developed to be pH neutral, they do not break down or become affected by hard water.
Rather than having to wash first and then proof after, our unique system that means you can wash and proof in one cycle. Place the Storm Wash in your washing machine just as you would a detergent and the Storm Proof in place of a fabric conditioner. Set your machine off as per garment label instructions. When the cycle has finished all you need to do is dry your garment. Being able to wash and proof in one was cycle saves water, energy, time and our planet.
Over time, dirt and oil mask the water repellency treatment on gear, meaning it starts losing performance and absorbing water. When you get wet you get cold. It’s time to wash and proof your gear
For best performance the application of heat in some form is recommended as this activates the bond between the proofer and the garment. Read your garment label instructions, you may be able to tumble dry however ironing through a tea towel or leaving for an extended period in a hot room or on a radiator are suitable alternative to tumble drying.
Keep the outside of your garment on the outside when washing and proofing. Check the pockets, Close all zips. Also ensure there is ample room within the machine drum, do not over fill the machine with garments, let the water flow fully around the garment, we suggest no more than two adult garments per machine cycle.
Household detergents are designed to wet fabrics, dislodging dirt and soiling. Residues of the detergent remain in the fabric after the wash to give an optically bright, clean appearance. These residues cause the surface water repellency to fail.
If you have already washed your garment with a household detergent all is not lost. Rinse the garment then put it through a treatment cycle using Storm wash and proof in one wash cycle to aid the removal of any detergent residue and also start to replace the surface water repellent. You may need to reproof your garment slightly more frequently than if no household products had been used.
If you prefer not to use a washing machine our products are suitable to be used in a bath, use the suggested bottle dose per bath fill (20 litres max), in other words, fill bath to just cover garments with tepid water. Agitate for a few minutes and rinse with clean water, follow by a proof mix if required.

For our foam self-inflating mattresses, proper storage is essential for future performance. Keeping your mattress flat with the valve open is the way to go. If you have a NeoAir mattress, simply roll it up tight and tuck it away for the winter.
Pro Tip: If you’re struggling to find room to store your full-size, self-inflating mattresses, here are a few suggestions.
- Behind the couch
- Under the bed
- Behind a bookshelf
- In the back of your closet

Periodic cleaning is recommended to prevent food, oils or other materials from prematurely degrading your Therm-a-Rest mattress. Add as much air to the mattress as possible; close valve with mattress fully inflated. Wash in a tub, using a soft bristle brush and any mild household degreasing cleaner or detergent. Formula 409® will remove sunscreen or bug repellent. Rinse well. Leave unrolled until dry. Do not store wet.

Baffles are chambers that allow down to loft fully in order to trap heat and keep you warmer. There are two main types of construction that can be used with down products: sewn-through and box baffled.
In all of our down sleeping bags, we elect to use boxed baffling in key areas. All of our products are predicated on helping you rest better by using the best performing materials with the highest level of design. That means that even when we aim to build the lightest or most packable or value-packed gear, we know that the first priority is your comfort. Our sleeping bag baffle construction is yet another way that we make sure that you enjoy better night’s at camp.

If you’re at home, our Permanent Home Repair Kit can help you patch a puncture. Depending on the model of mattress, it may require sitting overnight, but since you’re home that shouldn’t cause too many issues.
If you experience a puncture while out camping, hopefully, you’ve brought a Field Repair Kit with you. These kits are included with all of our NeoAir pads and easily slide into the included stuff sack. Though either of our repair kits will work, the Field Repair Kit is designed to provide a speedy, no-cure fix for any mattress.
For detailed information about do-it-yourself mattress repairs please see our Support Videos, here.
No All Therm-A-Rest mattresses are latex free.
The lifespan of a mattress is directly connected to the amount you use it. A mattresses' biggest enemies are body oils, bug dope, and suntan lotion. These substances can all contribute to the breakdown of the laminates that bond the external fabrics of your mattress to its internal components. Using a sheet on the mattress and cleaning it regularly (both the sheet and the mat) will help you get the most out of your mattress. A mattress that is used daily and seldom cleaned may only last a few months, while a well taken care of mattress, used occasionally under normal conditions, can last for many years.
We often hear from our customers about perceived leaks, particularly with air mattresses. One thing that is usually not a leak at all is a mattress that seems to have lost pressure during the night. If it’s not flat, but not as full as you inflated it before bed, the problem can often be attributed to the loss of air pressure as your mattress cools. This is particularly true if you inflate your mattress by mouth. The air going in is warm and, as it cools to the ambient temperature, you can lose quite a bit of pressure, requiring you to put a few more breaths into your mattress. This is also the reason we say to partially deflate your mattress before you leave it in your tent for the day. A full mattress can actually burst from the extra pressure if it warms enough in a hot tent all day.

UCO has spent countless hours developing our special candles. Wax formula, wick size, and other features were specially engineered to make this the ideal candle for our lanterns. Other candles can "melt down" prematurely due to improper wax formula. Other candles can leave significantly more soot on the heat shield compared with our candles. Be sure to ask for UCO candles at your favorite outdoor retailer.
Excess or spilled wax can be removed from the lantern by chipping or scraping it off with a blunt object. This is easier if you first place the part with the wax on it in a freezer for 10-20 minutes until the wax becomes brittle. You can also remove wax by heating until just hot enough to cause melting and blotting with absorbent material.
